Solana Launches Second Smartphone, Seeker

Solana Introduces New “Seeker” Device, Aims for More Than Memecoins

Solana has launched its latest smartphone, the Seeker, which is priced at half the cost of its predecessor, the Saga. Solana Labs General Manager, Emmett Hollyer, emphasized that while the Seeker will be a “rewards magnet,” it offers more than just access to memecoins.

Seeker’s Rewards and Features

The Seeker, much like the Saga, will offer rewards to its users. Previously, Saga’s popularity surged due to a sudden rise in the value of the Bonk (BONK) memecoin, driving sales. However, Hollyer insists the Seeker is designed to support a wider range of crypto use cases, including DeFi, payments, and gaming, thanks to an upgraded decentralized app (DApp) store and improved hardware.

New Hardware, New Opportunities

The Seeker promises better hardware, featuring a higher-quality screen, enhanced cameras, and a lighter build. While the Saga was criticized for its technical shortcomings compared to flagship phones like the iPhone, Solana aims to attract buyers with Seeker’s improved specs.

Rather than competing directly with tech giants like Apple and Samsung, Solana’s focus is on maximizing the device’s crypto utility in a mobile format, giving users access to innovative crypto apps and services.

Open DApp Store for Developers

A key feature of Seeker is its open DApp store, which allows developers to quickly launch new applications. Hollyer believes this will help capture emerging trends in the crypto space, ensuring that new use cases, whether for tokens or other blockchain applications, can be implemented swiftly.

Token Airdrops and Crypto Utility

Despite the focus on broader crypto integration, token airdrops are still a big draw for Seeker users. At launch, Seeker’s airdrop value stood at just over $265—significantly less than the $1,350 of tokens airdropped on the Saga. However, Hollyer insists that Seeker’s real value lies in the new experiences it will offer, not just rewards.

Breaking Free from Apple and Google Restrictions

Seeker’s app store operates with zero fees, making it a more crypto-friendly platform compared to Apple and Google’s stores. According to Hollyer, their strict policies hinder crypto innovation, particularly with token launchpads, where developers might lose 30% of their tokens to platform fees. The Seeker’s open app store aims to solve this, fostering the development of decentralized apps (DePIN) like Helium and Infield.

Footnote: A decentralized app (DApp) is an application that runs on a blockchain network, allowing users to interact directly without intermediaries.
