RMIT’s Blockchain Innovation Hub could be shutting down soon. On Nov. 22, Professor Ellie Rennie posted on X saying it was already closed but later said the situation is still undecided. Talks about its future are ongoing.
Why Is the Hub in Trouble?
The Hub, launched in 2017, hasn’t produced enough high-quality research to fund itself. RMIT gives a one-week window to discuss options, and co-director Professor Jason Potts now needs to come up with a plan to save it.
An Experimental Idea
This wasn’t a typical university research center. It focused on blending research with real-world industry work to quickly boost RMIT’s standing in blockchain. But this approach didn’t fit the usual university rules, which value academic publications over industry projects.
Why Now, When Crypto Is Booming?
It’s odd timing. Crypto markets are surging—Bitcoin recently hit nearly $100,000 after Trump’s election win and promises of crypto-friendly policies. Yet, RMIT is questioning the Hub’s place despite the growing momentum in blockchain.
The final call lies with RMIT’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Business, Professor Colin Picker.
