Steady ATM Expansion
For 29 consecutive months, Australia has seen a net increase in Bitcoin ATMs, reaching a total of 1,359 machines. This accounts for 3.5% of the global crypto ATM network, according to Coin ATM Radar. While this percentage may seem small, Australia ranks third worldwide in Bitcoin ATM installations.
Competing with Europe
Australia’s Bitcoin ATM count is approaching Europe’s total of 1,660 machines. If it surpasses Europe, Australia will have the third-largest Bitcoin ATM network globally, following the United States and Canada.
North America Leads the Market
The United States dominates the Bitcoin ATM market with 31,516 machines, accounting for 81.3% of the global total. Canada follows with 3,027 ATMs, or 7.8% of the market. Together, the US and Canada contribute over 90% of the world’s crypto ATMs. In comparison, Europe and Oceania each account for about 4%, while Asia holds just 0.9%. Globally, there are 38,753 Bitcoin ATMs.
Rising Scams via Bitcoin ATMs
As Bitcoin ATMs grow in number, so do scams involving these machines. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported over $110 million in losses from Bitcoin ATM-related fraud in 2023. Scammers exploit the anonymity and speed of crypto transactions to deceive users. In response, US lawmakers have urged major crypto ATM operators to address fraud, particularly targeting vulnerable groups like the elderly.
