Peter Todd Forced to Hide After Being Falsely Labeled Bitcoin’s Founder

Cryptographer Peter Todd has been forced into hiding after being wrongly accused of being Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin’s creator, in an HBO documentary.

In Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, which aired on October 9, Todd jokingly said, “Well yeah, I’m Satoshi Nakamoto.” Unfortunately, this comment was taken seriously by some, putting Todd in danger.

Todd denies being Nakamoto and blames the film’s director, Cullen Hoback, for misrepresenting him. He emphasized the dangers of being falsely identified as Bitcoin’s creator, explaining that it could lead to threats like kidnapping due to the huge amount of Bitcoin Nakamoto controls.

The situation is made worse by Todd’s history of jokingly claiming to be Satoshi, which people have misunderstood. Todd thought the documentary would be about Bitcoin’s history, not an accusation against him.

Hoback defends the film, saying it’s important to know who controls a large portion of Bitcoin. Todd’s case raises serious concerns about privacy in the cryptocurrency world and the responsibility of filmmakers when addressing such sensitive topics.
