Vitalik Buterin Wants Better Web3 Wallets

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, is calling on Web3 wallet developers to improve security and privacy features. In a Dec. 3 blog post, he highlighted the importance of making wallets as secure and private as the Ethereum network itself.

Privacy Without the Hassle

Right now, private transactions require using special “privacy wallets,” which Buterin says isn’t user-friendly. His solution? Build privacy features directly into all wallets.

For example, a wallet could hold some of your assets in a “private balance,” using a privacy pool to fund anonymous transactions. This would make private transfers much simpler and more accessible.

The timing is key: a recent court ruling in favor of Tornado Cash could pave the way for more privacy tools in crypto.

Making Wallets Safer

To boost security, Buterin recommends adding multisignature authorization to wallets. This means multiple approvals are needed for transactions, offering stronger protection against theft.

Smoother Transfers Across Networks

Buterin also wants wallets to make it easier to send tokens between Ethereum’s layer-2 networks, like Optimism and Arbitrum, which manage $50 billion in value.

He suggests a new address format like “@optimism.eth,” so users can send tokens between networks in just a few clicks. No extra steps, no confusion.

Since September, Buterin has been pushing for faster L2 decentralization, saying only scaling solutions with fraud-proof systems will earn his recognition by 2025.
