Pro-Crypto Group Challenges SEC Nominee

A group linked to crypto lobbying, Cedar Innovation Foundation, launched a campaign against Caroline Crenshaw’s renomination as an SEC commissioner, claiming she is too anti-crypto.

Ad Push Against Crenshaw
Cedar’s Dec. 9 ad campaign urged lawmakers to reject Crenshaw’s renomination. The group argues her policies, especially on Bitcoin ETFs, are more restrictive than SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s. Cedar claims this goes against voters’ desire for crypto-friendly policies.

Senate to Vote on Crenshaw
The Senate Banking Committee will vote on Dec. 11 to determine if Crenshaw’s nomination proceeds. First appointed in 2020, Crenshaw’s term ended in June 2024 but could extend to 2029 if confirmed.

Crypto’s Political Influence
Cedar is connected to Fairshake, a PAC that spent $140 million boosting pro-crypto candidates in 2024, including Bernie Moreno, who defeated crypto critic Senator Sherrod Brown. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said crypto money swayed key elections.

Funding Questions Remain
Cedar’s donor list remains secret, but its board includes Tyler Whirty, co-founder of crypto PAC HODLpac. Cedar denies ties to Fairshake despite overlapping objectives.

Fairshake has already announced plans to shape the 2026 elections, with $103 million in funding.
