Jack Dorsey’s company Block is bringing Bitcoin to Square. By 2026, sellers using Square will be able to accept Bitcoin directly.
This new feature uses the Lightning Network, a faster and cheaper way to send Bitcoin. Merchants can choose to either keep the Bitcoin or automatically change it into regular money.
Block showed off the new system at the Bitcoin 2025 event in Las Vegas on May 27. Customers just scan a QR code, and Lightning handles the payment in seconds.
“Merchants get more freedom. They can hold Bitcoin or get fiat instantly,” Dorsey posted on X.
The rollout starts in late 2025, with a full launch expected in 2026—depending on regulations.
Block already lets sellers convert sales into Bitcoin. This update makes it possible to receive Bitcoin too.
Miles Suter, Block’s Bitcoin lead, said the goal is to give small businesses more control and financial options.
At the same event, Dan Edwards from the fast food chain Stake n’ Shake said switching to Bitcoin cut their payment fees in half.
“Bitcoin is faster than credit cards,” Edwards said. “It saves us money, and it’s better for customers too.”
Stake n’ Shake will accept Bitcoin at all locations starting May 16.
Block is also improving Bitkey, its Bitcoin wallet, to be more secure and easier to use. No more seed phrases to memorize.
