Koreans Are Doubling Down on Crypto

Over a quarter of South Koreans in their 20s to 50s now own crypto. And 70% are ready to invest more. A new report by the Hana Institute of Finance shows that crypto is becoming a go-to financial tool in South Korea.

Who’s Buying?
Folks in their 40s are leading the way. 31% of them hold crypto, followed by 30-somethings (28%) and 50-somethings (25%). People in their 50s especially see crypto as a way to build wealth. 78% use it to grow money, and over half are eyeing retirement savings.

Why Are They Buying?
The top reasons? Growth potential, portfolio variety, and savings plans. Many believe crypto is a smart move for the future.

What Could Boost Confidence?
About 42% say they’d invest more if big banks got involved. Another 35% want better laws and protections.

Trading Habits Are Evolving
More Koreans are trading regularly. The share of people making routine buys jumped from 10% to 34%. Medium-term trading also rose. Meanwhile, short-term flips dropped a bit.

Where Are They Learning?
Less gossip, more research. Word-of-mouth is fading. More people now rely on official exchanges and data platforms for news.

What Are They Buying?
Bitcoin is still king. 6 in 10 investors hold it. But as people gain experience, they branch out. Some move to altcoins or stablecoins. NFTs and STOs? Not yet popular—most folks still stick to coins.

Banking Limits Cause Headaches
Many investors hate that they can’t link multiple bank accounts to crypto exchanges. If that rule changes, 7 in 10 would stick to their main bank.

Fear Factor Still High
56% worry about market crashes. And those unsure about crypto fear scams and shady exchanges.

What’s Fueling All This?
Desperation. Korea’s economy has cooled. Young people can’t afford homes or make money from stocks. Jobless rates for youth are double the national average. For many, crypto is the only hope left.
