Ethereum’s Next Upgrade Lets You Run a Node on Your Phone or Watch

What’s Happening?
Ethereum’s next big update, called “The Verge,” is going to make it way easier to run a node. Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, says this upgrade will reduce the amount of hardware you need—so much so that you’ll be able to run a node on your phone or even your smartwatch.

No More Huge Data Storage
Right now, running an Ethereum node requires storing a lot of data, which is a problem for most people. The Verge fixes that by using something called “stateless verification,” which means nodes don’t need to store all that data anymore. This makes it much easier for regular users, like solo stakers, to get involved.

Safer Crypto Tech
The upgrade also introduces something called Verkle trees. These make it faster and easier to verify transactions, but they might not be the best option against future quantum computers. Developers are looking at another option, called STARKs, that could offer better protection down the road.

Gas Fees Get Smarter
The Verge will also change how Ethereum handles gas fees, the cost of doing things on the network. The new system will adjust fees based on how much data or computation a transaction uses, making everything run smoother and more fairly.

Easier Staking for Everyone
With these changes, it’ll be easier for anyone to run a node and take part in solo staking, where you verify transactions on your own. This will make Ethereum even more decentralized because more people can get involved with less equipment.

Node: A device that helps keep a blockchain running by verifying transactions and storing data.
Staking: A way to help secure a blockchain and earn rewards by locking up cryptocurrency.
Gas fees: The cost of processing transactions on Ethereum’s network.
