Court Rules in Favor of Greenidge Mining

Greenidge Generation can keep mining Bitcoin in New York, at least for now. A state Supreme Court judge decided that the DEC was wrong to deny the company’s air permit in 2022, calling the decision “arbitrary and capricious.” The DEC will now have to review the case again.

The DEC does have the power to reject permits under New York’s climate laws, but this time, the court said their denial didn’t hold up legally.

Why It Matters

Greenidge’s plant has stirred a lot of controversy. Environmental groups, backed by Earthjustice, say its operations clash with the state’s climate goals. The Sierra Club’s Kate Bartholomew accused Greenidge of abusing the legal system to keep running.

Greenidge sees things differently. The company says the DEC’s actions were politically motivated and applauded the court for protecting local jobs and standing against what it called “governmental overreach.”

The battle isn’t over yet—Greenidge’s future depends on how the DEC handles its next move.
