Google to Enforce FCA Registration for Crypto Ads in the UK

Starting January 2025, Google will require advertisers promoting crypto-related services in the UK to register with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

New Policy for Crypto Ads

From Jan. 15, 2025, Google will allow ads for crypto exchanges and software wallets in the UK only if the advertisers meet specific requirements, including FCA registration.

Hardware Wallet Ads: Ads for wallets that store private keys for cryptocurrencies or NFTs will be allowed, but they must not offer services like buying, selling, or trading.

Compliance: Advertisers must follow local laws and meet financial regulations in the regions where their ads appear.

Global Ad Compliance

Google emphasized that this policy applies globally. Advertisers targeting any jurisdiction must understand and adhere to local financial regulations.

Regulators Crack Down on Crypto Promotions

This update aligns with global efforts to regulate crypto advertising.

FCA Action: On Dec. 16, the FCA warned against “Retardio,” a Solana-based memecoin and NFT project, for unauthorized promotions. The agency highlighted risks of consumers losing money due to the project’s unregistered status.

Nigeria’s SEC: Nigeria also tightened its rules, requiring virtual asset providers and influencers to obtain approval before publishing crypto ads.
