Brazil’s Data Watchdog Targets World ID Project
Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has upheld its ban on Tools For Humanity, the company behind the World ID project (formerly Worldcoin). The company is prohibited from offering cryptocurrency or financial incentives in exchange for users’ biometric data, specifically iris scans.
Privacy Concerns Drive Regulatory Action
The ANPD launched an investigation in November 2024, concerned that paying users for sensitive biometric data could undermine informed consent. The ban remains in effect, and Tools For Humanity faces a daily fine of 50,000 Brazilian reais ($8,800) if it continues these activities.
Global Scrutiny of Biometric Data Collection
The World ID project aims to create a digital identity system using iris scans. However, regulators worldwide are cracking down on similar initiatives. In May 2024, Hong Kong ordered Worldcoin to cease operations, and in September 2024, South Korea fined the project $829,000 for privacy violations.
The Future of Digital Identity and Data Protection
The case highlights growing concerns over biometric data collection and the need for stronger data privacy protections. Governments worldwide are tightening regulations to prevent potential misuse of personal information.
