Swedish MP Urges Bitcoin Reserve Inspired by Trump

A Swedish lawmaker just threw Bitcoin into the political spotlight.

Rickard Nordin, a member of parliament, sent a bold letter to Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson. His idea? Add Bitcoin to Sweden’s national reserves. No, not as a gimmick — as a serious hedge against inflation.

Nordin said Sweden’s foreign reserves are super conservative — mostly foreign cash and gold. But times are changing. Around the world, people are turning to Bitcoin to protect their money. Even governments are taking notes.

He pointed to recent moves by the U.S. President Donald Trump, who signed an executive order in March to build a Bitcoin reserve using crypto seized in criminal cases. The best part? No cost to taxpayers.

Nordin wants Sweden to consider the same — a “budget-neutral” Bitcoin stash. He says it could help protect against inflation and even support people fighting oppression in authoritarian countries.

Meanwhile, Europe stays mostly quiet on crypto. The EU is focused on launching the digital euro. Christine Lagarde, head of the European Central Bank, says it’ll be out by October. It’s designed to act like cash — private and easy to use.

But that rollout hasn’t been smooth. A recent outage in the EU’s main payment system sparked concerns. Critics wonder: If the EU struggles with today’s payments, how will it handle digital money?

Trump, for one, wants nothing to do with central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). His order bans any U.S. dollar-based CBDC completely.

Sweden now stands at a crossroads. Bitcoin in the vault? It’s not as crazy as it sounds.

What do you think?
