Ethereum Introduces ERC-7930 and ERC-7828 to Streamline Cross-Chain Transactions

Ethereum developers have proposed two new token standards, ERC-7930 and ERC-7828, aimed at enhancing cross-chain interoperability and improving user experience across decentralized applications (DApps), wallets, and smart contracts. These standards seek to address the inconsistencies and complexities currently associated with cross-chain transactions.

ERC-7930 introduces a compact, binary format for interoperable addresses, optimized for machine readability. This standard is designed to provide a unified address representation across various blockchains, facilitating seamless integration for protocols and applications.

Building upon this, ERC-7828 adds a human-readable layer to the address format, utilizing structures like address\@chain. This enhancement aims to simplify the user interface, making it clearer and more intuitive for users to specify target blockchains during transactions.

The implementation of these standards is expected to prevent users from inadvertently sending assets to incorrect blockchains, a common issue due to the reuse of identical addresses across multiple chains within the Ethereum ecosystem. By enabling wallets to be blockchain-agnostic and allowing the address input to determine the transaction’s destination chain, these proposals aim to reduce friction and enhance security in cross-chain operations.

The development of ERC-7930 and ERC-7828 is being spearheaded by Wonderland, a collective of developers, researchers, and data scientists focused on improving the Ethereum DeFi ecosystem. The group has collaborated with several DeFi protocols, including Optimism, Aztec, Connext, and Yearn, to refine these standards. Feedback from the Ethereum community is being solicited to finalize the proposals in the coming weeks.
