Aussie Police Crack $5.9M Crypto Wallet After Genius Code Break

The Digital Vault Breakthrough

Australian Federal Police (AFP) pulled off a major digital sting — unlocking a crypto wallet backup worth $5.9 million. The wallet was protected by a mysterious code that baffled investigators until a data scientist, now dubbed the AFP’s “crypto safe cracker,” cracked the puzzle.

Commissioner Krissy Barrett called the feat “miraculous work,” describing how the discovery came during an investigation into a tech supplier allegedly selling products to criminals. Officers found password-protected notes and an image full of random numbers on the suspect’s phone.

Numbers That Meant Millions

The code featured six groups of digits with over 50 variations. AFP’s forensic team suspected it linked to a hidden crypto wallet. The suspect refused to share his private keys — a move that could lead to a decade behind bars under Australian law.

Barrett said they knew if the wallet stayed locked, the suspect could walk free one day as a millionaire — “not an acceptable outcome.”

Cracking the Sequence

The AFP data scientist noticed the digits looked too human, not machine-generated. The trick? Removing the first number from each string revealed a pattern tied to a 24-word recovery seed. That revelation unlocked the wallet — and the crypto inside.

Digital Forensics on Fire

This wasn’t the scientist’s first crypto recovery. He had previously helped retrieve another $3 million in lost digital assets. Both seizures were handled by the AFP-led Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce.

If approved by the court, the funds will move into a government account and later help fund crime prevention projects across Australia.
