Offchain Labs has launched Arbitrum Stylus on the mainnet, a virtual machine designed to simplify decentralized app (DApp) development on the Arbitrum blockchain. Stylus enables developers to build using WebAssembly (WASM)-compatible languages like Rust, C, and C++, expanding beyond the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This flexibility allows developers to choose the best tools for their projects and promotes the creation of more powerful Web3 applications with lower gas fees.
According to Ed Felten, co-founder of Offchain Labs, Stylus unifies EVM-based smart contracts with traditional programming languages, making it easier for developers to create and deploy on Arbitrum. Some Stylus programs have shown significant performance improvements, running up to 70 times faster than those built on EVM, which reduces transaction costs and expands possibilities for high-computation applications.
Offchain Labs also plans to integrate additional protocols like zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) into Arbitrum to further enhance its capabilities. Felten envisions a future with hybrid protocols that combine optimistic and ZK elements, providing more efficient and cost-effective solutions for decentralized finance (DeFi) and other complex applications.
