MetaMask Auto-Opening on Chrome/Brave? It’s a Bug — Not a Hack
You’re not alone. Tons of users across Chrome and Brave are reporting that MetaMask auto-launches a new tab every time the browser starts. The link usually looks like this:

What’s Causing It?
MetaMask confirmed this is a bug introduced in version 12.14.1 of their Chrome extension. It’s not malware, not a phishing attack, and not related to anything shady like RATs or viruses.
🔧 From MetaMask support: “We’re aware of an issue in MetaMask Extension v12.14.1 causing the extension tab to open on every browser startup. An update is in progress.”
🚑 Temporary Fixes (Until It’s Fully Patched)
- Update MetaMask
Check if version 12.15.0 is available — many users say it fixed the issue. - Toggle the Full-View Option
Go to:Settings → Advanced → "Show extension in full-size view"
Toggle it OFF, then ON again. - Disable and Re-enable the Extension
In Chrome, go to:chrome://extensions/→ Toggle MetaMask off, then back on. - Unpin or Disable MetaMask
If you rarely use it, unpin it or disable the extension temporarily. - DON’T re-import your seed phrase or reinstall unnecessarily
Doing so won’t fix the bug — and always be cautious about exposing your seed phrase.
🚨 Reminders
- Do NOT enter your seed phrase into random popups or windows.
- MetaMask support will never DM you.
- If it feels suspicious but you’re using the official extension, it’s most likely just this bug.
✅ Good News: It’s Getting Fixed
Users are reporting that version 12.15.0 solves the problem. Check the Chrome Web Store and update manually if it hasn’t auto-updated.
