Paraguay Denies Viral Bitcoin Legal Tender Post

A wild Bitcoin post from Paraguay’s president caused chaos—then got deleted.

On Monday, Santiago Peña’s personal X account claimed Bitcoin was now legal tender in Paraguay. The post even said the country had created a $5 million BTC reserve and included a wallet for “investors.” Red flag alert? You bet.

Just minutes later, the official government account jumped in, telling everyone to ignore the announcement. The message: “Only trust what we say officially.”

Peña’s Bitcoin post vanished, but the confusion stayed. The government is now working with X (formerly Twitter) to figure out what happened.

This isn’t the first crypto chaos on X. Hackers love hijacking famous accounts to pump fake Bitcoin news. Remember when someone hacked India’s Prime Minister and claimed Bitcoin was adopted? Or when the SEC’s account was hijacked to say ETFs were approved? Yeah, not great.

So far, no clear answer on whether Peña got hacked or just jumped the gun. Either way, don’t trust everything you see on X—especially when it comes with a Bitcoin wallet address.

What do you think?
